Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
