Just as bad weather tore through the northern region the night before, City blew United aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing 3-0 win for their manager's side owing to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their championship potential as they reinforced their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Defeats for United

This scoreline signalled consecutive WSL defeats for Skinner's side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the league leaders with their title hopes in serious doubt.

The Red Devils' capacity to manage domestic and European soccer with a thin team has been a widely debated topic since they qualified for the UCL. Considering the fixture list, it always felt like this was the period that would truly test this capability. Unfortunately for the visitors, they seemed fatigued from start to finish, the landmark win against PSG clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

Second Half

The clearest substitution came from Skinner at the break as Melvine Malard came on for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to change the course of the contest. Ex- City player Park came most likely to score, striking the upright, but the away team were offensively poor and did not manage to register a one shot on target.

The home side, on the other hand, could have extended their cushion when a delightful Vivianne Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it was insignificant to the winning team. Having failed to beat any team who placed above them last season, City's side now have victories against Arsenal and Manchester United to put them in a favorable position after nine matches.
